Okay, lets talk about who out there is 'fashionable'

Is this really fashion?

Hi girls! I'm now at the point of being so tired I've gone a tad hyper, so I thought I'd write this now since Alex and her brother are watching a film in the living room. I had a great day at work, I actually really enjoy it(!) but after this I'm going to attempt to wind down with having a bath with Lush's Ickle Baby Bot thrown in there to relax me!

BUT before I do that, there's another question I'd like to ask you all; it's something I've been pondering on for a while.
Does money = fashionable?

I follow quite a few fashion blogs now, although they aren't the main type of blog I look for when I'm on the hunt for new reading material. The thing is, I can't help but notice that the girls who are seen as the 'most fashionable' are the ones who seem to have £100+ to blow on a dress on a semi daily basis. Is that fashionable? I'm not so sure.

In my opinion (and it really is purely my opinion) someone who has a notion of matching colours (if that's even applicable that month) and who can follow what Vogue says to wear that month, is automatically fashionable. IF, and it's a big if, they have the money to constantly be out buying BCBG and Chanel. But is that right, or fair?
I don't think it is. I have so much admiration for the girls who go to charity shops or thrifting and step out a couple of days later having altered the clothing into something that makes them look drop dead stunning. Or the girls who scour the high-street for a bargain and come up smelling of roses.
That to me is fashionable, that's a woman who has her own vision, not someone elses. A woman who knows what she's doing and who she is, rather than following what she should be wearing.

But I'm sure I may be alone on this one. Are you team Chanel or team Charity shop? What are your thoughts? I'd love to know!

  1. I'm kind of somewhere between Chanel and charity shop, lol. I like well made, beautiful clothing, but I don't feel I need to spend ridiculous prices to get it. I've also never had one particular "style" or "look." I wear what I think looks good on me. If it happens to be "in" that season, great. But that's not why I'm buying the product. I like going to stores like Macy's and Forever 21 and finding things on sale, not looking at the most expensive designer clothes and picking them up just because of the name on the label. I like your interpretation of what being fashionable is, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. :)

    1. I love your opinion on this, I think the point you just made was well argued and a brilliant outlook on fashion and what it is to be fashionable. I completely agree with what you've said. Beautiful and well made clothes are lovely, and lets face it, fashion is their job. But how people put things together and their attitude on how they wear it is what makes it. Thankyou so much for taking the time to reply <3 x

  2. Team charity for sure! I just can't justify more than £40 for a dress at the absolute most x

    1. I have one dress that was £80 I think and I roll it out for the special occasions in my life (few and far between haha) but on the whole, I agree with you. It scares me that I'd have to stand at work for almost 2 whole days to pay for that one thing, and that all those hours of work would be over in one quick swipe at the till! x

  3. Well I'm a firm believer in the Meryl Streep quote from The Devil Wears Prada...

" 'This... stuff'? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select... I don't know... that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent... wasn't it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff."

Basically - I think its all the same thing. Some people have the money to splash on expensive stuff (And I think its beautiful, if I had the money I would buy it too!) and some people don't - but its all fashion, it all comes from the same place at some point.

    xx

  5. I love fashion blogs but I don't know how half the people can afford to wear seemingly new clothes every time they blog! Even those who wear highstreet stuff! I don't shop in charity shops but I will quite happily go to shops such as Primark and buy my clothes from there, recently I think they've done really well at producing dupes of clothing from Topshop and I would never pay Topshop prices so thumbs up for them! I don't mind spending a little more if it's on something for a special occasion but even then I only shop on the highstreet and I'll only buy something if I know it's going to get worn to death! xx

    1. I know what you mean, if I had new things to wear every day I would be stoney broke! Evidently we need their jobs! x

  6. I think i come down on the side of charity shops. I love going in there and having a root around and a lot of the time you will find lovely clothes that have high end highstreet tags in them for a fraction of the price.

I am a girl who doesnt really follow what is currently in fashion, i may have a flick through the mags just to see what is about but to be honest a lot of the time i look at the price first and then the item to see if i like it, not the other way round.

If i go shopping then i will pick clothes out because i like how they look/feel and if it just so happens they are on trend then for me it is just a coincidence. I again dont like the idea of having to work 2 days (or however many) to pay for the expensive item i have brought.

    1. I have to agree, it's the whole slaving away for hours on end to buy one piece. Fair enough to the girls who want to do that, it's their money! But for me, I don't feel like I need Chanel to look fabulous hehe ;) x
